If you're planning a trip to Israel's Negev desert, you've probably already seen "stargazing tour" on a few itineraries. Here's what that actually means in practice, and how to tell a great tour from a rushed one.

Ramon Crater sits inside the only internationally recognized Dark Sky Reserve in the Middle East. That's not a marketing phrase, it's an official designation for a place where light pollution is deliberately kept low enough that you can see the sky the way it looked before electric light existed. Most dark sky reserves in the world require hours of driving into open desert to reach true darkness. Here, a few minutes outside the town of Mitzpe Ramon is enough.

What a typical tour actually includes

Expect roughly 90 minutes to two hours, split into two parts. The first is naked-eye orientation: learning to recognize bright stars, find constellations, and use a green laser pointer to trace shapes in the sky. The second part moves to telescopes, viewing the Moon up close, visible planets (Jupiter with its moons, Saturn with its rings, sometimes Mars and Venus), and on darker nights, star clusters and distant galaxies. The clearest views of faint objects like galaxies happen around the new moon, when there's no moonlight washing out the sky. Summer nights are warm and pleasant and include the year's most reliable meteor shower, the Perseids, peaking around August 12-13. Winter nights are colder but often the clearest of the year.

What to bring

Even in summer, desert nights get cold fast once the sun sets, the same dry air that makes the sky so clear also lets heat escape quickly after dark. Bring a light layer even in August, and a proper warm layer in winter. Closed, comfortable shoes are recommended, as the ground is rocky.
